Nevertheless our hero, an Easterner, is advised by his doctor to leave that all behind and go West, meaning not simply Ohio or Iowa, but West beyond the Missouri. And so it was that he found himself on the platform of the Union Pacific rail buying a ticket to Benton, of Wyoming Territory, a city of 3,000 at the farthest end of the railway. The plan was to travel to the Black Hills Mountains of Wyoming to another range of the Rocky Mountains, in Utah- and that by the end of the year one might ride comfortably clear to Salt Lake City.Luckily, a pretty young woman was also on the train headed west.

A perfect blonde, of the petite and fully formed type, with two eyes of the deepest blue veiled by long lashes, and a mass of glinting golden hair upon which perched a ravishing little bonnet. As soon as he crossed the Missouri River, he began to sense romance, and to discover it.The Pikes Peak RushIt was 1859 and Spring had come to the ranch, up the Valley of the Big Blue, Kansas Territory.

Excitement had come, too, for Harry Revere had been down to town and brought back Kansas City and St. Louis newspapers. They were brimming with the news of gold-seekers swarming to cross the plains for the new gold fields, discovered, in the Pikes Peak country of the Rocky Mountains.Ralph had gold fever again.Other books by the same author:Gold Seekers of 49The discovery of gold in California was hailed as a chance to get rich quick.

It seems a long, long way to travel back to 1849, when thousands of men forged ahead, bound for the Land of Gold. Some made their fortunes, but the best that any of them achieved lay in the towns that they founded, the laws that they enacted, the homes that they established, and the realization that these things were of more importance than the frenzy for quick wealth.

This is Edwin Sabins story.
